Stephen Hansen Solo Show
Great Moments in Art
Saturday, June 30th
Water Street Gallery artist Stephen Hansen returns to Michigan for his incredibly imaginative show featuring his ‘Great Moments in Art’ series. Hansen’s approach to these masterful artworks is a historical exercise in the unconventional. His ever-famous 3 dimensional “painter” becomes an “artist” who discovers the secrets of master artworks by Picasso, Warhol, Van Gogh and many others.
Hansen brilliantly creates the gestures and expressions in each little painter; and in whimsical fashion, integrates them into the masterpiece. The relationship between the 2D image (the painting) and the 3D image (the painter) is what makes these pieces “Great Moments in Art”.
According to the artist, the project started with a “Mark Rothko” painting and the notion that one’s life work might have been accomplished in one brilliant weekend with a paint roller. “What if art work really was, well…work? And paintings were done by painters?”, says artist Stephen Hansen. “It had never occurred to me, until I became involved in this project; to pretend to be someone else for a few days. It is a bit like a holiday…though I would recommend Gauguin over Van Gogh.”
