Artist's Bio:
Influenced by such artists as Corot, Matisse, Morandi and Fairfield Porter, Richmond combines open air and studio experiences to create images using gouache and other media. A graduate of the Art Academy of Cincinnati and holding an MFA from the University of Notre Dame, Richmond taught painting at Northwestern Michigan College for ten years and continues to instruct drawing and painting workshops. She exhibits regionally and is represented in a number of Midwest corporate collections. Richmond has received numerous awards at juried exhibits and was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome the spring of 2015 and 2016. Visit her website at joanrichmondart.com.

Artist’s Statement / Painting with and in the landscape:
Observing nature and painting in situ is a challenging and rewarding experience. An artist can experience the effects of light first-hand and translate those visual and emotional responses directly to paper or canvas. I particularly enjoy painting in Michigan. This region contains all the elements of a sublime landscape: vast skies, clear water, sandy beaches and verdant hillsides. I paint on location when the weather and time permits but also bring sketches, color notations and photos (what the French painters call aides-mémoire) to my studio to complete paintings or to revisit a scene.
