Artist Statement:

"I want to peel away the false layers one builds up over time to shield themselves from the world and show how similar we all are to one another."

The deeper I go into my paintings, the more I begin to realize how alike we all are. We lose track of what is "Real" around us. I hope to remove this fictitious veil that clouds and distorts our vision and show the true relationship of humanity through paint.

I have always been searching for some kind of connection to people and my surrounding environment. I do portraiture because it helps me understand where I fit in and realize we all have experienced the same ups and downs. We are all together. We are all the same. This is what I want my community to experience through my work. There is a connection we all share and by understanding our differences brings us closer to our similarities.

Bowen Kline is a Southfield native with a national reputation as one of the country's finest artists.  He is self-taught, and his works are held in private collections nationwide.
Today, Kline makes his home in Romeo, Michigan and is especially known for his expressive portraits and nudes.  Kline's extraordinary works reveal his own heart and speak to a different cultures and identities.  His paintings show isolation and loneliness, but also hope and wonder.  Kline creates art that is fresh, daring, unforgettable.  "I've spent the better part of my life in a small room with a lamp with no shade, trying to figure out who I am," he said.  "I've never been called ‘the great communicator.'  My voice is heard through my paintings.  My work is an extension of myself, what I see and experience."
